What is the instagram post size in pixels?

An Instagram post displays at 1200 × 1200 pixels on your Instagram Profile. However, you can post larger images at 1080 × 1350 pixels that take up more space in the feed. If you decide to post bigger images in the feed, remember that these images will be cropped slightly in the top and bottom on your profile as you can see in the example below.

If you are creating an instagram ad it's highly recommended to use the bigger post size as taking up more space in the feed also means higher chances of getting engagement on your instagram post. Keep in mind that my templates are not built for the bigger size, so you will need to adjust the size yourself.

What does 4:5 aspect ratio mean on Instagram?

The aspect ratio of an image refers to the relationship between its width and height. An aspect ratio of 4:5 on Instagram means that the width of the image is 4 units, and the height is 5 units. This aspect ratio is commonly used on Instagram, as it allows the image to be displayed at full resolution in the main feed on most devices. Additionally, this aspect ratio is similar to the dimensions of a standard photo print, so it can be a good choice for images that may be printed or shared outside of the platform. When using this aspect ratio for your Instagram posts, it's important to ensure that the image is properly sized to fit within the recommended dimensions for the platform.

To put it short, the aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of its width(4) to its height(5). Essentially, it just describes an image shape. If you look at the sizes further up we currently recommend 1200 × 1200 - that's the same as a ratio of 1:1 as both width and height is equal (a square).

However, if you use 1080 × 1350 - that's a 4:5 aspect ratio.

To do the math:
1 unit = 270 pixels
4 units = 270 + 270 + 270 + 270 = 1080 pixels
5 units = 270 + 270 + 270 + 270 + 270 = 1350 pixels.

The aspect ratio is scalable meaning that 108 × 135 is also a 4:5 aspect ratio. Where 1 unit is just 27 pixels. But don't go that low, that would be a very tiny instagram post size and look make your image look blurry.

Anyway, the same goes for 16:9 and all other aspect ratios. It's basically just the shape of an image in "units" that you can convert to pixels and scale in size. So when you see the aspect ratio of 16:9 for facebook (also know as widescreen), you can say that it's 16 pixels wide and 9 pixels high - or if you multiple that by one hundred then: 1600 × 900 pixels. You can read way more on aspect ratio on this link.
